The Unconquerable Me ("_")

When me and my bro were small, we were taught by mumma only at home. We didn't go for tuitions till class 8th. Mumma used to always keep track of what was going on in the class and she used to make us memorize each and everything on the same day that they were done in school. She used to put her heart and soul in our studies! When our exams were on..she used to be much more nervous than us for our exams! This thing really used to get on my nerves sometimes as she would never let us go out even for a minute during our exams!

It was 1995. I was in 1st standard and my exams were goin on. I had my Hindi exam next. My mom had made me learn every answer by heart. I was always awed by one quality of my mom. She always told us what was important for exams and what was not. And sometimes she even used to declare with full confidence that a particular question is going to come in the exam! And that question actually used to be there! Sometimes I even used to doubt that my mom was the member of the board which sets the paper for exams but she never tells us! That time also she was sure that I would definitely get one poem. And so she made me learn and write the only poem in my course 5 times to make it sure that I don't forget even a single spelling.

When we got the question paper..I found that question on the very first page! And that too for 8 marks! I was delighted! The question was as follows ;
"Apni paathya pustika me se koi bhi aath panktiyon ki kavita likhen". (Write a poem consisting of 8 lines from your course book) The know-it-all Me wrote the whole poem in a very neat handwriting. I was extremely concerned not to make any mistake. So, i read the question once again after writing the poem. "Apni paathya pustika me se koi bhi aath panktiyon ki kavita likhen".

Aath panktiyan
!! Oh my God..I needed to count my lines. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8..errr..9 10! Shit! By mistake my poem had 10 lines. I didn't know any other poem! But this was surely not what they were asking for. How can I write a 10-lines poem when they have only asked for an 8-lines poem! No problems then!! I rubbed the whole poem!!! Yes! The whole poem coz it had 10 lines!

When my mum saw the question paper..she didn't find it necessary to ask me whether I had written the poem or not coz it was obvious for her that I couldn't forget even a single line of the poem since she had made me learn it even in her dreams! But just for formality she asked. And I told her. I told her that for the first time in her life she was wrong! They asked me an 8-lines poem and u taught me a 10-lines poem.

My mum's jaw dropped! She was unable to decide whether to slap me or to laugh! My Di sitting beside her couldn't stop laughing! And I was dumb-founded seeing the contradiction of the situation. I didn't know why my mum was angry and at the same time why Didi was laughing!

U don't remember! And u were the one because of whom I was saved. Mom didn't slap me that time only because she knew u wouldn't let her! Warna to I had no chance of being spared!!
